Melbourne restaurants.Discrimination is not an issue in this city as it is definitely a very cosmopolitan city. If you eat at restaurants, it can be very expensive but it is worth the money for the culinary experience. ![]() The food is quite ok too. There are lots of choices not too expensive if you go to the right places. If a visitor eats frugally, I think around AUD25 a day on food should be ok. They are not visible to the casual foreigner but there are food courts in the shopping malls. There are Vietnamese restaurants, Cantonese, Thai, Japanese, Malaysian and I suppose all kinds of ethnic cuisine available if one really looks for it. That is the beauty of Melbourne. Unlike New york however, Melbourne is still a small city so the service is less stiff-lipped and a smile is always under the surface and the service is excellent be it in a pricey restaurant or some moms-and-pops establishment in some hard to find alley. There are some good Italian restaurants. Pricey but worth it. I can still feel the taste of sirloin steak and rack of lamb on my tongue. I thought I had to speak Italian too. As I stumbled through my limited Italiana, the waitress smiled and suggested I speak English instead. The waiter was like a Greek God. I could imagine him posing in the nude in some piazza some where in Athens. Beautiful. One Greek restaurant that made an impression on me for its good food is the Saganaki Greek Restaurant. Your culinary experience will not be complete without a visit to Hofbrauhaus, a fabulous eatery in the heart of Melbourne that offers unlimited German revelry.
